Snakes

Mississippi is home to nearly 40 different types of snakes. They can be found roaming around anywhere in the state, forests, reservoirs, or in your back yard. There are four that are common in North Mississippi: copperheads, Grey Rat Snakes, Black Racers, and Brown Snakes. Copperheads are common around Oxford and are one of the most venomous snakes known to man. They prefer woodland areas, where their camouflage will keep them hidden right up until they strike. Grey Rat Snakes, also known as "chicken snakes," can get up to 7 feet long and are known for slithering their way into houses and attics, searching for rodents to eat. Black Racers are incredibly fast, reaching slithering speeds of up to 5 miles an hour and lengths around 4 feet. In the Delta, they may appear bluer in color than black. Brown snakes are extremely thin, and tiny – reaching only a foot. They like to hang around gardens and feast on slugs.
